Starting A Bookkeeping Business
Starting a bookkeeping business may sound a little intimidating to you or even seem impossible but yet you are intrigued by the concept of doing exactly that. There are a lot of reasons why bookkeeping can be an excellent business move.
Maybe you think that you need previous experience or that you need a master’s in math to be able to do this. While it is important to enjoy working with numbers (this is what you will be doing most of the time after all) you do not have to have a calculus degree either.
The truth is, anyone can learn to start their very own bookkeeping business. You don’t need to have any previous bookkeeping or marketing experience and you do not need to have your Ph.D. in math.
Let me clarify the previous paragraph. Anyone that has the drive to succeed can start a bookkeeping business. That is what is really going to determine whether you make this work or not.
It really is that simple. You have no boss looking over your shoulder and checking in to make sure that you are doing the things you need to be doing to be a success. No one is going to push you when you don’t feel like doing anything.
So, the real question shouldn’t be, can you start your own bookkeeping business? The answer to that is yes, you can!
The real question that you need to determine is, do you have what it takes to be a bookkeeping business owner from home?
Find Out What Your “Why” Is
The first thing that you need to ask yourself is why you want to do this, to begin with. Are you sick of punching a time clock? Do you want more time with your family? Are you looking to make more money than you’re currently making now?
All of these are legit reasons for starting your own business but they need to be specific to you. Your “why” is going to give you the drive to push through the tough times as you begin your journey.
The reality is that there will be times when you feel lost, stuck, or simply feel like giving up. This is simply human nature. We have all been raised to go out there and get a J-O-B. Make that daily commute working for someone else to provide for you and your family.
It’s hard to break out of that mold at first and a little scary. We are afraid of failure which, in return, prevents us from even taking that initial step, to begin with.
Looking back when I first started out learning about affiliate marketing, I knew nothing. I was a complete newbie with no previous skills but I wanted a better life for my family. I was sick and tired of working 70 hours a week and with a new baby on the way at the time. I knew I had to make a change.
That was my “why”! Putting in all of those hours in a factory is no way to go through life. I no longer wanted to come home and be exhausted. My wife and kids deserved better than that.
There are people out there that want more out of life and if you are reading this, you are probably one of those people. Why work to make someone else rich while you grind away for the next 40 years? Why not find a way to make an excellent living for yourself now?
Once you determine what your “why” is, you need to write it down. Then, put it somewhere where you will see it every day. Tape it to the bathroom mirror, or wherever you are going to have that constant reminder of why you chose to start your own bookkeeping business.
Have Your Family On Board
If there is one point that I need to stress it is that you need support from your family. If you are married, your spouse needs to support you 100%!
Not having a supportive spouse will squash your dreams as a home business owner in a hurry. Sit them down before you do anything and talk to them and let them know what it is that you want to do.
When I say this, I am talking specifically about your spouse since they are the ones that will directly be with you through the process.
Chances are, other friends and family will not be on board with your decision. You can tackle this one of two different ways. The first is to tell them, to put yourself out there to drive you to prove them wrong. This will also make you accountable for following through with your choice to take the step of building your own bookkeeping process.
The other choice you have is to not tell them at all until after your business is up and running. I am talking about the people not in your household here.
What I chose to do was to not tell my family (outside of my wife of course) what I was doing until after I was seeing some success. Again, these are the friends and family outside of my household.
Why, did I do this? I didn’t want the eye rolls and negative thoughts to begin creeping into my head. The cold hard truth is that people want you to fail for the simple fact that they can tell you, “See, I told you that you couldn’t do it” simply because they would not do it themselves.
All I needed was support from my wife. The rest of my family found out after I started seeing results. By doing this, I got encouragement from them instead of doubt. That was my choice. What you decide is up to you but definitely have your spouse on board.
Mindset Creates Success
When all is said and done, your mindset is going to determine whether or not you are going to have a successful business or not.
When talking about mindset you need to tell yourself that there is no giving up. Nothing is going to get in your way. No matter how long it takes you are going to keep pushing to make it happen.
If you can create this thought process then congrats! You are about to have a very successful bookkeeping business on your hands.
That is really all there is to it. If you tell yourself that nothing is going to stop you then nothing is going to stop you! If you are worried about the training (which I am going to lead you to in a minute)… don’t! I can say this with complete confidence because it is the best out there!
It is simply a matter of following that training and taking action. There is no need to overcomplicate things because it isn’t complicated at all. Following the training = a successful bookkeeping business.
One other point I wanted to make when dealing with your mindset. Be patient! There is a good chance that you may not have any previous bookkeeping experience. Don’t worry, you don’t need it.
But, know that it takes time to develop any new skill set. You need to learn and practice those new skills so that you become good at what you do. Having your own bookkeeping business is not a get-rich-quick scheme. You are not going to be making thousands next month when just starting out.
At the same time it does not have to take you a couple of years either, and if you have the drive… it won’t take that long! Understand that you’re not going to have a thriving bookkeeping business right away. It’s going to take work and practice but in the end, it is so worth it.
