You are considering starting your very own bookkeeping business, but one thing is still bothering you… how do you begin marketing to potential clients? The answer may surprise you.
What if there were an easy way for people who have just begun their journey in bookkeeping, which can be a little overwhelming with all these accounting terms and procedures – well now I’ve got YOU covered! Our tips below will help make it easier than ever before and give you the confidence to push forward in your new venture.
Marketing Your Bookkeeping Business
Here is what I can tell you about marketing. First of all, the cool thing is that every business needs a bookkeeper (or some type of bookkeeping even if that means they do their own).
It is required by law that all businesses must have their books done, so in reality your not selling anything. It is all built-in demand! All you have to do is show your potential clients WHY YOU!
The other thing to keep in mind is that bookkeeping is very easy to explain. Think about that for a minute. Every business out there already knows what bookkeeping is and that they are legally obligated, by law, to have it done.
I put that last sentence in bold because if there is one statement that holds true and should give you peace of mind when it comes to marketing your business, that is it! Now, there are three different components that you should know when it comes to marketing your bookkeeper business.
What Is Your Market?
It would be best for you to focus on a particular niche, or in other words, a specific profession. This can be anything really, dentists, drywallers, or lawyers that focus only on bankruptcy cases for example.
I think you know what I’m getting at. This may not seem like such a big deal to you at this point but in reality, it is probably the most important thing you will want to do.
There are a couple of reasons for this for those not familiar with niche marketing. The first reason is that you are going to be building a website for your business.
You need to have this niche-specific, otherwise, you will have a very hard time getting anyone to see your site at all simply because it is too broad.
You want your site to jump out at someone and say, “Hey, I see you own a dog grooming business… you are in luck because I specifically focus on offering my bookkeeping services only to small business dog groomers”!
That alone tells the business owner that you probably know everything about bookkeeping for dog groomers already, and chances are you will, which gives you a huge advantage over other bookkeepers. Chances are extremely high that their current bookkeeper does not focus on what their business is in.
What Is Your Marketing Message?
What is it that you are going to say to people? What your market is, is very important since, if you have a decent message to the right market, you will do amazing things!
But, if you have an awesome message to the wrong audience, you’re not going to get anywhere.
Think about when you are watching TV. Ever notice how the commercials are catering to whatever show it is that you’re watching?
Flip over to Disney and a majority of commercials are for toys. During the daytime on a weekday do me a favor and pay attention to how many commercials focus on retirees! This is conveying your message to the right audience, it really is that simple!
What Types Of Media Will You Use?
You are going to need to know which avenues of advertising you will be using. More importantly, I should say, how many avenues of advertising you will be using.
You do not want to simply focus on one or two ways of promoting your business. Technology changes at the speed of lightning, if you are only focusing your marketing efforts on one type of media, it is entirely possible that it could disappear in a blink of an eye.
The more types of media that you can use the better off you will be. The neat thing about using multiple types of marketing is that over time they seem to take on a life of their own.
By this I mean, once you tell enough people what you do then those people begin to tell people about you and so on and so forth.
The same goes for having your own website. Focus your site to a specific niche and get it in front of the right eyes and your site will begin to get more leads simply by focusing it on a particular niche.
The best thing you can do in the beginning is to start by setting up an internet presence.
Set up a website, make sure it is in good order—meaning that it’s easy for visitors to find the information they are looking for—and post your contact information. You should offer free estimates or request appointments via e-mail or through the site itself.
The important thing to keep in mind is to make it easy for them to become a customer! If they need more information (which most people will), then give it to them. Don’t “sell” to them, just give them the facts.
Once you have an online presence, be sure you are networking on at least one social media site. This is a great time to explore some of these sites because they are all free and most allow anyone with an internet connection to join.
Facebook has over 200 million active users each day and Twitter has over 4.5 million active users. Even though both Facebook and Twitter can be great resources, the place you should really focus on to get started is LinkedIn!
LinkedIn has more of a professional career-focused theme to it, so if you are looking for professionals to offer your bookkeeping services to, LinkedIn should be at the top of your list!
