How To Become A Bookkeeper And Start Your Own Business In 2022

Whether you are aware of it or not, you have a bunch of different options that are available when you begin your journey on how to become a bookkeeper and start your own business.  The real question is, what is the best, most efficient, and cost-effective route to take?

As far as learning bookkeeping is concerned, you could take classes at a typical college or you can go the online route as well.  These are both reasonable options but what if you not only want to learn bookkeeping but also learn how you can start your own bookkeeping business?

If you are thinking of going the traditional college route to do this then you are talking about tens of thousands of dollars and at least 4 years minimum to do it… ouch!  So for the sake of this post let’s just forget about college because that is neither efficient nor cost-effective for what you are looking to accomplish.

How To Become A Bookkeeper And Start Your Own Business In 2022

Some questions that you may be asking yourself are, can this actually be done? Can you learn both from the comfort of your own home?  Is it legit or just a way of separating me from my hard-earned money? Can anyone do this, even with no bookkeeping experience?

Do any of these describe you? I would be willing to guess that at least one of these questions ran through your head so let’s get into this a bit and allow me to tell you why I think there is one program that’s WAY better than anything else out there and how you can do it.

The bigger question that you may need to be asking yourself is, how do I become a bookkeeping BUSINESS owner? First, I will discuss the traditional college route followed by what I believe to be your best option when looking to work from the comfort of your own home as a bookkeeper.

Going The Traditional Route

Okay, I changed my mind.  Let’s go ahead and break this down a bit so that you are able to see what you are looking at when it comes to a brick-and-mortar college.

Depending on what your goals are, there is nothing wrong with going through a traditional college to learn bookkeeping (accounting).  Well, that is if you don’t mind the time it’s going to take and the money that it is going to cost you.  But, what if the thought of running your own bookkeeping business intrigues you?

Here is where things could begin to get a little costly for you as well as the length of time that it is going to take you to learn how to achieve both.

You are basically going to have to double major in both accounting and business to learn what needs to be done to not only learn bookkeeping but also run your own business. Even then, it is going to be difficult to tie both together.

You also have to be aware of the fact that I don’t believe that there is a marketing degree available that is specific to bookkeeping. What you need to learn is how to market to businesses that are looking for bookkeepers and how to get your product your service in front of your target audience.

You should be looking for a marketing platform that is bookkeeper specific. Doesn’t this make the most sense? If you were about to take a marketing position with Nike, for example, wouldn’t you want to specifically learn how to market shoes?

Another sticking point is the time that this method is going to take. At the very least, you are probably looking at 2 years of classes (and I’m pretty sure this is really pushing it). I’m not even sure if that is doable but it may be possible if you become a full-time student the entire time without taking summers off.

I should also quickly mention the money that it is going to take. I don’t think I even need to get into the cost of colleges these days.

I don’t bring these points up to discourage you. College is a legit and safe route to go. But, I simply don’t feel it is the BEST route to take when wanting to learn how to start your own bookkeeping business.

The Non-Traditional Route (Recommended)

What if there was a way to learn bookkeeping and how to market your own bookkeeping business in a little as 10 weeks? This option sounds much better than a 2-year absolute minimum, doesn’t it?

If having an up and running bookkeeping business in as little as 3 months doesn’t interest you then this is probably not for you.

Are you still reading? Good!

What if you could learn to market your bookkeeping business online so that you could gain clients that are potentially thousands of miles away from you. This is a pretty new concept that even 10 years ago wasn’t even possible or at least plausible. With the advancements in technology though, this is now a real option for you.

What if you could potentially have your first client secured before you even finish the course? Could you imagine having your business in the black before you even finish learning everything? Yes, this can and does happen!

Of course, this simply depends on your goals and drive. If you don’t want clients that soon, of course, this is completely up to you. I simply want to show you the potential that is out there if you want it.

What about the money?

If you are simply looking to learn bookkeeping and work for someone else you are looking in the range of $36,000- $46,000 per year according to

What do you think you could earn by running your own business? How does an average of $80 an hour sound?  If you did the math to see what that would be per year you are looking at $166,400!!!

There are, of course, different factors that come into play here but on average this is roughly what you can expect. Check out my post on how this is broken down as far as the earning potential based on how many clients you have.

Can Anyone Do This?

The short answer is… yes! As long as you have the drive to run your own business you can do this! Now, the bigger questions is… SHOULD you do this?

This is a question that is important to ask yourself for the simple fact that not everyone SHOULD run their own business. There are certain criteria that you should possess in order to consider this as a viable option for you.

You need to keep in mind that being a business owner can be a lonely place. It is up to you, and you alone, to do the things necessary to have a successful business. Check out the traits that make for a successful bookkeeper business owner.

While your success is up to you, that doesn’t mean that you won’t have any support along the way. Let’s face it if you know nothing about bookkeeping or business you are going to have questions.

Know that you will have access to a private group that is worth its weight in gold when it comes to getting your questions resolved quickly.  There are thousands of other students that are more than happy to help you out along the way and to keep you on track.
