Listen, what is the one thing that will crush your work from venture quicker than a bolt of lightning? The answer is… letting those dreadful doubts creep into your head. The absolute most important thing that you need to maintain as a small business owner is a positive mindset!
You could have to perfect business model and potential clients ready to be banging on your door begging for your business but if your attitude is crap, then you have nothing! Being able to maintain that positive attitude is going to be critical in running a successful business from the comfort of your home.
A Positive Mindset For Home Business Owners
Let’s take a look at the definition of mindset:
“A set of beliefs or a way of thinking that determines one’s behavior, outlook, and mental attitude”
Notice that this definition is not for a POSITIVE mindset but for mindset in general. That is because you choose whether to have a positive or negative mindset and that determines how successful you will be as a home business owner.
Choosing to be negative is going to all but guarantee your failure because it will show through in every aspect of your business. This also includes the fact that any potential clients will pick up on this as well.
Take Control Of Your Life
You must choose to take control of your life. Nobody can, or will, do this for you. Being a business owner can be a lonely place from the standpoint that you are your own boss. There is no one to drive you or to tell you what you need to do.
You have two options each day. Either you run your day or you let your day run you. If you can make the choice each day to run your day the way you choose then great things are going to happen for you.
By doing this, what you end up doing is creating your future success. Your business does not come with a crystal ball, if it did, things would probably be a lot easier since you would already know how things will work out for you.
The thing is, by having the right mindset and by doing the things that need to be done, in a sense, you do have a crystal ball after all. If you do what you know you have to do you WILL be successful.
This includes those things that you probably don’t want to do but know that you have to. You can go about this in 2 different ways. Push through those tedious tasks and simply get them done, or hire someone to do them for you.
I am a huge fan of hiring others to do the things I don’t want to do but also keep in mind that it’s best to at least do them yourself at first that way you have the understanding and know-how before passing it off to someone else.

Know Your “Why”
You need to know WHY you are doing this. Why do you want to run your own bookkeeping business?
You need to give this serious thought since this is going to be the main driver that pushes you through the tough times. Yes, there will be tough times. Nobody is able to maintain a positive attitude 100% of the time so knowing why you are doing this is essential.
It is when these tough moments surface that you need to know your “why” to help push you through. When you know your “why”, that leads you to know where you want to be in the end.
Your “why” leads directly to your end goal. So you need to visualize that end goal along with how you will feel when you get there.
Athletes do this all the time. I am a huge football fan so I will use that as an example. Visualizing making the perfect pass, making a hard clean hit, or making a one-handed grab for a touchdown can make all the difference in the world.
When you visualize these things over and over you can begin to feel how you would feel when that actually happens which then drives you towards chasing that moment or in the case of you, the business owner, achieving your “why”.
So, why do you want to start a home business? Is it to quit your J-O-B and work from home full-time? Is it to spend more time with your family? Do you want to travel the world or just have more free time?
Once you know your “why”, then you need to make it very specific. What are the fine details of what you want to accomplish? The more detailed that you are the more likely you will be in achieving those goals.
It’s not good enough to just say, “I want to spend time on the beach”. What you want your “why” to be instead is, “I want the freedom to spend 2 weeks every year at the best resort in Punta Cana without having to worry about money”.
It’s also not enough to simply think about your “why”. It will just become another random thought that comes and goes if you don’t write them down! Write all your “why’s” down and post them where you will see them every day that way you have that constant reminder of what your end goals are.
“People don’t buy what you do.
They buy why you do it.” – Simon Sinek
Begin With The End In Mind
I kind of hinted towards this above when I was talking about the athlete mindset. What I mean by this is that you need to know where you want to end up when all is said and done. Not only know but visualize how you are going to get there.
You accomplish this by being effective and efficient. Effective is simply doing the right things and efficient is doing the right things well!
Let’s say you are looking to build a new house. You search and search and finally you find a plot of land that you fall in love with.
Why did you fall in love with it? It is probably because you visualized what it would look like when all the building is done. You know exactly where you want the house to go, you imagine your kids playing in the back yard and if it’s out in the country somewhere you already know what trees you are going to take down to make things perfect.
The same goes when building your business. Visualizing how everything will be in the end will create that positive mindset that you will need down the road. You simply need to see, feel and experience it before you do it.
“To begin with the end in mind is to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you’re going so that you better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are in the right direction.” – Stephen Covey
Don’t Wait, Move Fast
What do I mean by this? Simple, don’t try to make things perfect right away. Doing this is simply going to drive you crazy. All you need to do is take action.
Don’t worry about perfection. As you go through the process of learning everything there is to learn and begin building your bookkeeping business (or whatever business you decide to run with), then things will become clearer as far as knowing what you want to tweak.
What tends to happen by trying to make things perfect from the get-go is that you end up freezing. Nothing gets accomplished at all because you are worried about whether it’s good enough or not.
All you need to tell yourself is to just do it now and I’ll make it better later. To sum it all up, you have to be an action taker.
