It is important to understand the importance of choosing a niche market to focus your efforts on once you begin your new bookkeeping business. At first thought, you may think that you would be better off simply trying to just go after anyone and everyone.

There is one major problem with marketing your business this way. Marketing to any and all businesses out there does absolutely nothing to separate your bookkeeping business from all the other bookkeepers out there. You need to stand out. You need to be heard.

Your goal is to be a big fish in a little pond, not a little fish in a big pond.  The last thing that you want to do is to waste your time.  After all, you have enough work to do.  The last thing that you should have to worry about is whether or not you are marketing to the right businesses, or worse yet, does anyone even know that you exist?

I have used this example before in a previous article but I will run through it again real quick. Since I am a die-hard Buckeye fan I will use them as an example this time around.

Let’s say that you want the world to hear about your new bookkeeping business. So you walk out to the 50-yard line in a sold-out Ohio Stadium. That means you are sharing your business with around 105,000 people. Sounds great right?

The problem is 104,000 of those people don’t think that they need a new bookkeeper and they don’t even listen to you because you have done nothing to separate yourself from any other bookkeeper out there.

To make matters worse, the 1000 people that may be interested can’t even hear what you are saying because the other 104,000 that don’t care are talking and carrying on so they can’t even hear what you are saying.

Now let’s say that you have a specific niche that focuses specifically on dentists. You rent a small conference room full of dentists that seat 50 people. Are you going to be more successful talking to the 105,000 people in Ohio Stadium or the 50 dentists in a 50 person conference room?

I can guarantee that you are going to have a lot more success by sharing your business with the 50 dentists.  And that in a nutshell is niche marketing.

Let’s Dig Deeper As To Why This Is

I get it, on the surface, thinking about sharing your business with any, and everyone seems to make more sense but that simply isn’t the case.

The reason is that you are doing nothing to stand out from the thousands of other bookkeepers searching for new clients. Which statement do you think is going to make you stand out in a room full of dentists?

“I am a bookkeeper” or “I help dentists to make more money”

Common sense tells you that the second statement is going to have a much bigger impact. By saying this, you are letting every dentist in that room recognize a few different things about your business.

  • They will remember you!
  • You are an expert in that field
  • By stating that you help them to make more money, you are telling them that you are more than a bookkeeper. You are someone that cares about their business and is looking to help them out financially to the best of your abilities. This is what you call your Unique Selling Proposition.
  • Even if some of those dentists are happy with their bookkeepers, dentists know other dentists and you can bet that they will let those other dentists know about your business.
  • By establishing that you specialize in dentists, you are telling them that you can show them what to do, as well as, what not to do to help them to be more profitable.
  • You understand their unique needs.

Stand Out From The Competition

Let’s say that you are competing for a dentist’s business with another bookkeeper. Your business focuses on serving dentists, and the other bookkeeper whose business is identical to yours other than the fact that they serve anyone that they can. Who do you think that dentist is going to choose?

The common-sense choice is you because you have made it crystal clear that you specialize in their field. This gets even better! Unless you are competing with another bookkeeper that went through the Bookkeeper Launch course, there is a very high probability that your competition is NOT doing this.
