Bookkeeper Launch Interview With Tracy Owen

Bookkeeper Launch Interview With Tracy Owen

I love having the opportunity of sharing other students’ experiences and thoughts about Bookkeeper Launch.  The way I see it, what better way to learn about the legitimacy of a program than to hear from the actual people that have already gone through it?

Below is another one of those interviews with Bookkeeper Launch student, Tracy Owen.  Check it out!

When did you first join Bookkeeper Business Launch?student headshot

I joined in January 2017.

Did you have any previous bookkeeping experience before BL?

I did have prior experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, and a little payroll.

How about any previous experience running your own business?

I had no prior experience running my own business before Bookkeeper Launch.

Were you worried that Bookkeeper Launch was a scam when you first considered joining? If so, what changed your mind?

No so much about it being a scam but ensuring that this course could be relevant to me as I am based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Watching the 3 free videos I could tell that Ben Robinson was genuine and many times he stressed that this business was not for everyone (and still stresses that).

What was your overall impression of the training?

I found the training very thorough, yet easy to stay focused on (let’s face it, it’s kind of hard to make bookkeeping fun and entertaining sometimes).

How long did it take you to go through the entire course?

I finished the course in April 2017, so 3 months, but I was still working and have 2 kids at home and 1 in university at the time.

Did you find the Facebook support group to be helpful?

The Facebook group is such a good place. It’s so positive and everyone is so helpful and helps celebrate other’s wins and helps other’s get through the tough times as well.

Do you think anyone can learn to become a bookkeeper?

I think it does take a special breed to be a bookkeeper. Any business that requires long hours working by yourself is stressful, but being a bookkeeper is a bit harder, in my opinion. You can’t learn everything needed to do, each client’s business is different and each client thinks differently. So not only are you working on their books, which may have unique hurdles, you also need to know how to interact with each client and their personality.

What do you think are the most important traits in running a successful bookkeeping business?

Understanding that this is not a race but a marathon. This is definitely not a get rich quick business. And to remember that the service we provide is not just data entry. It may start out that way, but as the relationship grows with your client you can and will become a trusted advisor and be able to offer so much more.

How long did it take to land your first client? How many clients do you have now?

When I launched my business in June 2017 I started subcontracting with an accounting firm and started out with 2 clients. Then in July 2017 got my 1st client through my business. Now, in August 2019, I have 10 clients through subcontracting and 12 of my own clients and I have signed on with another accountant for referral work and an accounting firm based in Ontario, Canada to subcontract as well.

Does your bookkeeping business focus on a particular niche?

It didn’t start out that way, but a large number of my clients are in the trades industry (concrete, drywall, excavating, landscaping), but I also have 3 non-profits, a care home, a yoga studio and an architect.

As a whole, what is your overall impression of the Bookkeeper Launch course?

I feel that it’s a great course and the training and ongoing support is fantastic.

Any final thoughts or advice that you would like to offer to anyone considered joining?

If you love bookkeeping (and you must be able to do this business) I feel that this is the best course to learn bookkeeping, how to run your own business, and to build up your confidence. I only wish I had found it earlier.

What Should You Do Next?

Finally, I wanted to personally thank Tracy for taking the time out of her busy schedule to do this.  These students that I interview are not compensated by any means by doing these interviews, they do it because they want others to have the same opportunity they had to become their own boss.

If you would like to check out Tracy’s website so you can get an idea of what you will be building then feel free.  Heck if you are in search of a good bookkeeper feel free to reach out to her!
